PLYMOUTH, WIS. – Natural cheese maker Sargento toasted the beginning of National Grilled Cheese Month in April by partnering with three family-owned Austin, Texas, restaurants to come up with creative versions of the sandwich.
The Wisconsin-based company, which traveled south to Texas in a special grilled cheese food truck for the occasion, featured Sargento Creamery Slices in each recipe.
"As a family-owned cheese company, I've seen the creativity and passion that food can inspire firsthand,” said Sargento chief executive officer Louie Gentine. “For years we've been bringing new flavors, varieties and forms to natural cheese. Grilled cheese is one of my favorites and, as a dad, I think I've perfected it for my kids and me. I'm excited to try these new takes on grilled cheese from other family businesses in a city known for its food."
Chefs from popular Austin-based restaurants Black's BBQ, Nixta Taqueria and Tamale House fashioned their own elaborate versions of grilled cheese.
The Black's BBQ Brisket Grilled Cheese teamed Sargento Creamery cheddar with brisket, sausage honey and pickles. The Nixta Taqueria Duck Carnitas Grilled Cheese added Sargento Creamery pepper jack to duck carnitas and creamy avocado salsa. The Tamale House Chicken Tinga Grilled Cheese combined Sargento Creamery baby Swiss with chicken tinga and avocado.
Said Barrett Black, fourth generation pitmaster at The Original Black's BBQ: "Partnering with Sargento was such an easy decision, since we have that love for innovation and family in common. Getting to pair our old-school Texas BBQ with Sargento's cheese just made perfect sense."
Sargento said it will share original recipes, grilled cheese tips and more on its website throughout April as it celebrates National Grilled Cheese Month, with special content also planned for its social media channels.
